Online Reviews vs Reality

As of this day, December 14, 2015 and for quite a while now, Tattered Rose has received some wonderful reviews on Yelp.
We have 4 1/2 stars out of 5; 7 reviews showing and 4 hidden 5 star reviews!

Thank you to all of our wonderful customers who took the time to write reviews...it means a lot to us; however, the real truth is in your actual visit to our shop.

We may have our off days, after all we are human, but we really DO try to make each and every person walking through our doors feel welcome.

And then we try our best to help you find the perfect outfit, accessory and/or home decor item to add to your repertoire.

This year marked our 20th year in business; 16 of those operating as Tattered Rose. Yippee!

BLACK FRIDAY SURPRISE SALE! TODAY ONLY!

 
Tattered Rose never has HUGE sales, as such, although we DO always have a sale rack at the back of the store.

So, even though other stores are having 50% - 70% off for Black Friday sales, that just doesn't work for us.

Why? Because most of the clothing we sell isn't trendy, "throw-away" clothing and therefore to be gotten rid of. That type of clothing isn't what we were built on although we DO have a smidgen of it for our trendier customers.

Most of our clothing is timeless, and romantic, vintage or vintage-inspired.....as well as one-of-a-kind hand made designs.
So 10% off all black merchandise in the store, plus 10% off already marked down clothing on the sale rack is a big deal for us.

We just wanted to be part of the fun of BLACK FRIDAY....which is an idea that originated in the USA, the day after Thanksgiving.

As the Crow Flies...a Gothic tale by Tattered Rose

On my daily walk this morning, there was a solitary crow at the roof peak of the school I pass by...it was crowing it's heart out. Perhaps, he too was miffed by the loud sounds of children playing in the schoolyard. But I digress....

Actually, it made me think of the colour (or should I say, non-colour) BLACK. As a child, I never wore black. I didn't know about wearing black back then, as it was many decades after the Victorian mourning period, where it was accepted that family members of a lost loved one would wear all black for some time after the death.

When I was about 6 or 7 years old, my older sister, who was about 18 or 19 years old, came back home to live again, after seeing the world for a few years. I would watch with fascination, as she put her makeup on and did her hair while getting ready for a date, wearing black lingerie and sometimes even a black sweater or pants. I noticed the black but still, it wasn't appropriate for children to wear black.

Fast forward to my first real job in business. A young lady who became my friend wore a lot of black and even though I greatly admired her style, I was still into wearing mostly colour with some grey thrown in.....

Then, somewhere down the road, in my own sweet time, I too developed a fondness for wearing black. As most of my customers will attest, I am usually wearing black and/or grey...my two main wardrobe colours and the ones I always feel most like myself in.
There are a lot of us who wear a lot of black and Tattered Rose has plenty of black clothing as well as Gothic & Steampunk clothing.

Black crows, black cats, black clothing....what do they call it when things just come together like that?

From Victorian to Gothic....Steampunk to vintage....original designs & handmade....office soft dressing (Sympli the Best) to casual (Cut Loose) and so much more that cannot be described in a few sentences.

And while the owner/in-house designer is a little bit eccentric & goofy, she has a heart of gold and really wants to make each customer feel wonderful in what they buy to wear. I can say that about myself because I know my thoughts.

♥Shop Local in Edmonton♥

Edmonton is such a diverse city with lots of choices when it comes to shopping......from West Edmonton Mall to all of the little boutiques found in so many nooks and crannies throughout the city, including Tattered Rose.
It's what makes the shopping in our city so interesting....many have said it is even better than Calgary.
Please try to shop local and not give your dollars to online stores that are somewhere else in the world. I know that once in a while, it is unavoidable....like when you can't sleep because your husband is snoring at 3:00 am and there are no local stores open to shop at.....
But aside from those instances, if you make it your goal to get out and see your city, support your local shops and markets, it will mean that we can continue to be as diverse and beautifully charming as we can be.
Let's make Calgary jealous.......in a friendly-rivalry-sort-of-way.

Child of the Universe

The other day, a family came into Tattered Rose for the first time...a Mom & Dad and their daughter, who was about 9 years old.

The fact that I am still thinking about this little girl shows what an impact she had on me...hers was the soul of someone who seemed to have lived decades more than her age (or maybe lived in another time)

She was articulate, mature in an innocent, childlike way and she loved the store. She gently pointed out to her parents items of clothing and art that she found particularly beautiful. Her eyes glanced around the store, soaking up every inch of it and enjoying just being there. It made my heart feel so happy to see this child "get" what my shop is about.

I found myslf talking to her more than her parents because she is one of those "old soul" children you come across now and then who you just want to know better because they are so interesting.
I am certain that if Tattered Rose is still here when she is a young woman buying her wardrobe, she will be shopping in my store because she will remember how it made her feel when she was in as a little girl.

I love children like that....almost makes me wish I had a daughter or two.

Tattered Rose "Official" Blog Has Moved

In order to maintain our exclusivity, the official Tattered Rose blog has moved to a new location.  This blog, which was our main blog until March 6, 2015, will remain intact, although most of the posts have been removed.

All new posts and pictures about new arrivals in the shop, new ideas and cat stories, will now be posted on our new blog, which is more private for your exclusive Tattered Rose experience.

We are in the process of sending invitations to all people on our mailing list who read the last newsletter (sent in February 2015)

A Personal Story From Me.....

Note: None of these pictures are of me.

If you are a regular customer of Tattered Rose, you are used to seeing a brunette (me) in the store and a brunette (me) helping you find your perfect outfit.....and a brunette (me) chatting away, laughing at her own jokes.

That is going to change.....because I have decided to allow my 50 shades of grey to grow in, after 20 some years of colouring to hide them.

The first month (which was January of this year) I covered my roots with a brown hair crayon and it was hard to tell what was going on with my hair.

But now, into my 3rd month, my silver/grey roots are over 1" long and really prominent on top of my head and I am no longer covering them up......scary? You bet! I also chopped about 4" of dark brown off my head, getting rid of some of the darkness and am left with a shaggier bob than before and a whole lot of silver strands peaking out at the sides and back. I'm pretty sure that I will let my hair grown out again but who knows? This is like a very personal journey and it is at the same time, exciting, scary, empowering, liberating and natural. 

Many of my customers know that grey is my favourite colour and I am looking forward to having my hair match most of my clothing & jewellery, which ranges from black to grey with a smidgen of brown. I'm not sure how brown clothing will look with my grey once it has fully grown out, so I'll just wait and see.

I've received many different responses from "Good for you" to "It will look great on you" to "Why would you do that?" and I have come close to giving into the vicious cycle of colouring my hair, having it look good for about a week, seeing roots, covering them up with a hair crayon until I can't stand it any more and it's time to colour again after only 4 weeks.

To keep myself going, I read stories of other brave women who decided to do the same thing, and then I look at pictures of women with all shades of silver and grey hair, thinking that they are all so individual and beautiful and striking. I'll settle for "striking" because I sure ain't beautiful.

P.S. Thanks for reading my story. Next time you come in, at least you will know that my grey roots are intentional and not a matter of laziness on my part. Wish me luck!

Tattered Rose has been carrying this beautiful Canadian-made line of clothing for about 6 years!

My how the time flies....from the first time I saw the line, tried it out with a very small collection to now, with one of the largest and most carefully chosen collection (that suits our store and clientele) from Sympli the Best.

Being a clothing designer, I am perhaps a little more discerning when it comes to what styles are sold at Tattered Rose.  For one thing, I like the more dramatic, romantic, feminine pieces and like to mix these with some of the more basic items.

Will Sympli the Best ever be known as "Steampunk" style? Naw, I don't think so but it sure is interesting, practical and above all else, beautifully designed....and made right here in our own country.

Available in MANY colours, if we don't have it in stock, we will gladly order it for you in the size and colour you want!
